He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Texas Medical Association, Tarrant County Medical Association, and American Society of Retina Specialists. Patel has contributed to the diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration sections of the 8th edition of the Wills Eye Manual. He has co-authored over 25 peer-reviewed publications on secondary lens fixation, retinal detachment repair, diabetic macular edema, and “wet” age-related macular degeneration. Patel has served as a co-investigator on over 20 clinical trials studying the treatment of “dry” and “wet” macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, diabetic macular edema, and retinal detachment repair. He was a faculty instructor in Ophthalmology at Thomas Jefferson University, where he supervised the next generation of resident physicians in the clinic and the operating room.ĭr. During his fellowship, he served on the retina service of Wills Eye Hospital. Patel completed a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at Wills Eye Hospital, the nation’s first and top-ranked eye hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed his residency training in Ophthalmology at the Los Angeles County Hospital. Patel matched at the nationally-ranked Roski Eye Institute at the University of Southern California (USC). During his clinical rotations, he discovered his passion for surgery and ophthalmology.Īfter graduation from Harvard Medical School, Dr. Patel was awarded a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Medical (HHMI) medical research fellowship, performing translational research at Dana Farber Cancer Institute, focusing on developing new chemotherapies.

Patel jointly attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard Medical School to pursue his medical studies as part of the Health Science and Technology (HST) program. He wrote his master’s thesis on original translational research that he performed on molecular drug development for gastrointestinal cancers. Patel obtained a Master’s degree in Chemistry within his four years of study.

He attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he triple-majored in biochemistry, economics, and biophysics, graduating with Summa Cum Laude honors and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Petersburg, Florida, where he graduated as valedictorian of his International Baccalaureate class at St. Patel approaches clinical care as an art, espousing a patient-centric philosophy tailoring the treatment to the needs of each patient and their disease.ĭr. He is highly skilled in the latest surgical treatments of macular pucker, macular hole, floaters, retinal detachments, vitreous hemorrhage, and secondary lens fixation, among other procedures. He specializes in the medical evaluation and treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, and other vitreoretinal disorders. Patel is a board-certified, fellowship-trained vitreoretinal specialist.
